How the band name generator works
Each genre has its own word lists and name shapes. Metal leans on ancient, molten and shattered things; folk on willows, kettles and wandering; jazz likes quartets and late-night avenues; punk is cheap, cranky and photocopied. About a quarter of the time a word is borrowed from an everyday list of teacups, walruses and escalators instead, which is where the funniest clashes come from: an Obsidian Teaspoon is more memorable than another Obsidian Dragon.
Lock the words you like with the padlock under them. The banner keeps its shape and changes only the unlocked words, while the six names below put your locked words into new patterns. Press the flag beside any name in the list to move it onto the banner. Back steps through earlier banners, and the heart saves a name to your list.
Before you print the T-shirts
- Search the name on the big streaming services and social networks: names are mixed at random, so one can match a band that already exists.
- Say it out loud to someone in a noisy room. If they have to ask twice, a promoter will spell it wrong on the poster.
- Check that a matching web address and social handles are free before you fall in love with it.
- For anything commercial, look it up in your country's trade mark register too.
